ANDRE :: MY OWN HEADSHOT
So i finally got a headshot. No it was not taken by me, and it's not a selfie. I thought i would share my thoughts and experience through the process of getting it done as it was the first time i was in-front of the camera and not behind it so i can really relate to what my clients go through :-)
It still amazes me how many people don't take this seriously. Yes granted i was one of them, but no more. I've been preaching the merits of a good headshot for years but i've never actually had it done for myself. Now having been in-front of the camera for a session i can confidently say it was one of the best things i could have ever done.
There were a few requirements for me to actually have the session done: it should not be shot by me and, it should still be done in my studio. So i asked a friend of mine to come in and shoot for me. I setup all the lighting and the shot but he took the headshots. I was shocked at how different the session felt to me, the fear, the insecurity and not knowing if i was doing the right things.
I understand now the benefits of constant feedback during the session and why my work has been so successful for others.
Why have a headshot done?
Marketing and Brand management is a daunting task for anyone, especially those in business and consulting. We are always needing to put images out-there that represent us and our brands but what to do if you don't have a great shot? You probably end up using an old one, or (the worst) one from facebook someone tagged you in.
Control your public branding
Is this really doing you and your images any favours? Does it represent your brand, your image and your message? Is it appropriate? Does it send the right message? All these questions will haunt you every-time you click submit. At least that was my experience. Now fast forward to after the session and i have a headshot i like, it feels right for me, it has the right message and it represents my brand well. So the result is that i have it up on every single network i have.
The session was totally worth it. I now have a headshot i can CONFIDENTLY use on all my social networks that represents me, speaks to my style and personality and gives people a unified images across all my networks that i control. Here is a quick example of how the images look across the different networks, excuse the slight colour differences these are just screen grabs:
Save time and Brain-Space
By having the shots ready to go and in a place where i can get to them easily has helped me save my time when i need to use a shot. They are all right there. No digging through facebook or instagram to find SOMETHING usable.
Network with Confidence
A very welcome but somewhat unexpected result has been that i find myself networking much easier. Now that i have a professional headshot ready to go, i'm connecting the reaching out a lot more, and to people a generally would not have a approached previously. People are now also starting to reach out to me on their own.
Its a well known fact that the quality of the image you use as a profile picture represents how much you value the people you are reaching out to. Do you respect them enough to have a professional image to represent you? I hope so.
